April 2009
Easter Egg Hunt
Greenhouse Gallery
Giant Pumpkin Starts
Spring has finally arrived!
Spring has definitely arrived and everyone on the farm has been basking in the sunlight the past couple days. Along with spring has come a fury of activity and we can’t wait to show you all of the beautiful plants that have been hiding in the greenhouse all winter. But first let me tell you about a couple activities that are coming up soon on the farm.
This Saturday at 1:00 is our annual Easter Egg Hunt and the cost is $3. Every year the Bauman Grandkids look forward to this day, rain or shine they are ready to attack that field and find as many eggs as they can. Hailey, Jeremiah and Amie’s daughter, and Allyson, my (Brian’s) daughter, are about the same age and this will be the first year that they really get into the hunt. Austin, my son, is an old pro now and has been trying to teach Allyson the tricks of the trade. He knows now to shake the eggs before he puts them into the basket because the ones that don’t shake have a free donut or ice cream cone in them. We hope all of you will bring you kids or grandkids out on Saturday, we have a ton of fun and there are always tons of eggs to go around and everyone walks away with a smile on their face. If nothing else it is so fun to see all the kids lined up around the field waiting for the go ahead. We hope to see you there.

The weekend of April 25th and 26th is our 2nd annual Greenhouse Gallery. Last year was our first year and we worked really hard to find enough artists to make the greenhouse full and this year we fit in an additional 8 booths and we still have a waiting list of three to four artists who would like to get in. Those of you who attended last year can attest to how much the show was. In the mornings from 9 to 1 Honeywood Winery will be here serving Mimosas and we will be adding some of our frozen fruit to each one. They are so good and it's such a fun atmosphere looking through the art work with a mimosa in your hand and the flowers blooming all around you. It truly is a great experience! For lunch time we have something really special this year. Eri, my cousin's wife, is from Japan and she makes the most wonderful sushi. I have beg and pleaded and she has agreed to make some for lunch during the Greenhouse Gallery. Trust me, you have to come out and try some! For a complete list of the artists at the show please go to our website http://baumanfarms.com/annual-greenhouse-gallery.html. |

Last month you were some of the first ones to find out that Bauman’s Farm and Garden will be the site of this year's Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off. We are so excited about the event being held here and with the help of local businesses we have put together a prize package totaling about $20,000. If you want to get in on some of this prize money we are going to get you started out right. Growing a prize winner Giant Pumpkin takes a special type of pumpkin seed and germinating these seeds is not always the easiest thing to do, therefore, we decided to start a couple hundred plants in the greenhouse and have them ready for you to plant in your garden. The weekend of April 25th and 26th, during the Greenhouse Gallery, the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers, where you can purchase one of these plants, will have started in our greenhouse and it will be the perfect time of year for you to put these mammoth growers in your garden. Also we will have professional giant pumpkin growers on hand to answer any questions you may have. In order to grow your very own giant pumpkin you need one of these special plants and you need to get it in the ground before the first of May. What a fun activity to bring the whole family together!

The recent warm weather has gotten everyone in the mood to get out in the garden. We just brought up the first hanging baskets of the season that are showing the first signs of their beautiful color and we have also brought up Tomato and Fuchsia starts this last week. Now is a great time to start planting your garden but remember to protect many of these plants from any late frosts that Mother Nature may be throwing at us during this month. We also have a selection of great early flowering plants such as Nemesia and Diascia that have beautiful color and can take a late light frosts. Even if you're not ready to plant now is a great time to come out to the nursery and take a look at the large selection we have this year and be one of the first ones to get some of our new varieties we have grown this year including a sure fire winner, Vista Silverberry, a dazzling sport of Vista Bubblegum, which has become one of our top selling trailing petunias.
We look forward to seeing all of you soon!
